80th Anniversary of the Opening of the Oswego West Pierhead LighthousePosted on Jan 16, 2014
The H. Lee White Maritime Museum is celebrating the 80th anniversary of the opening of the Oswego West Pierhead Lighthouse this year. A Lighthouse Events Committee has been formed to work on several activities. Members of the Oswego Lighthouse Events Committee are Kathleen Turner, Gail Goebricher, Corrine Pauldine of McEwen Auction Company and Mercedes Niess, executive director of the HLWMM.
The first event will be the Lake Ontario CNY Lighthouse Challenge, June 21 and 22, 2014. Organizers are contacting other lighthouses within one and a half hours of Oswego to arrange for special visitation. Participants will received an item at each lighthouse they visit and then return to the Museum with their completed “race” sheet for a prize. The event is to educate visitors about lighthouses and create an enthusiasm for the Oswego West Pierhead Lighthouse, a local icon.
In the summer, a series of displays, programs and lectures will celebrate Lighthouse Day and US Coast Guard Birthday Day. A U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Boating Safety Course will be offered during Harborfest.
An auction is being planned for late October or early November to benefit the lighthouse restoration project. Volunteers are needed to help coordinate and work at the events.
The Museum Lighthouse Committee will be holding a planning meeting on Sunday, January 26, 2014 2:30 pm at the H. Lee White Museum. Interested members of the community are invited to attend this meeting.
