Hunting Safety Courses

New hunters must complete a mandatory hunter education course to obtain a hunting license. Hunters following safety rules taught in these courses have made hunting one of the safest types of recreation. Courses may be listed in:

  • Statewide list of classes on the NYS DEC website
  • The “outdoors” section of local newspapers
  • Stores that sell hunting supplies
  • Rod and gun clubs
  • Town clerk offices and other sporting license sales outlets

For more information and class schedules, call or write Regional Sportsman Education Offices. Oswego
County is located in Region 7, phone 607-753-3095, ext. 241.

Where can I get a license?

The Department of Environmental Conservation regulates hunting and fishing in New York State and sells licenses. Licenses are also available at a variety of outlets in Oswego County. Check the DEC’s Hunting and Trapping Regulations or Fishing Regulations Guide for license requirements.

Sporting licenses may be purchased over the counter at license issuing outlets in Oswego County. See the Fishing & Hunting Services section beginning on page 17 for a list of outlets. Hunters under 16 must apply for a license in person and be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Licenses are no longer sold at DEC regional offices, except Region 1 on Long Island. Licenses may also be purchased by mailing:

  1. a standard license application,
  2. a copy of your driver’s license, and
  3. a previous hunting license or a copy of your hunting education certificate to:
    • WorldCom, P.O. Box 36985, Phoenix
      AZ 85067-6985.
