Oswego Music Hall Presents: Dave Gunning & James Keelaghan - There are stories that wash over you like a tide, and then there are stories that grab you by the heart. Dave Gunning has made a point of finding the latter and wrapping them up in song since he broke upon the East Coast music scene in Canada back in 1997. The Pictou County, Nova Scotia born and bred singer-songwriter and working class hero has built up from humble beginnings to a point where his name is regularly included in conversation with artists such as David Francey, James Keelaghan, Ron Hynes, Stan Rogers, Bruce Cockburn and Gordon Lightfoot. Writing from a sonic menu that includes flavors of Irish, Scottish, folk and country musical styles, Dave transcends genre with songs that fill your senses and touch your soul.
James Keelaghan is one of Canada's international stars. His passionate mix of roots rock, Americana, and contemporary folk has established Keelaghan's presence in Europe, Australia, and North America. While growing up in western Canada, Keelaghan was an avid follower of music and theater, but studied history while attending the University of Calgary. Music took over, however history would be a major catalyst in Keelaghan's warm-hearted songwriting.
Admission $14 per person. Doors open at 6:45pm

October 20, 2014

Private Violence is a feature-length documentary film and audience engagement campaign that explores a simple, but deeply disturbing fact of American life: the most dangerous place for a woman in America is her own home. Every day in the US, at least four women are murdered by abusive (and often, ex) partners. The knee-jerk response is to ask: “why doesn’t she just leave?” Private Violence shatters the brutality of this logic. Through the eyes of two survivors – Deanna Walters, a mother who seeks justice for the crimes committed against her at the hands of her estranged husband, and Kit Gruelle, an advocate who seeks justice for all women – we bear witness to the complicated and complex realities of intimate partner violence.
Premiering on HBO at 9 pm on Monday, October 20th.

Oswego Music Hall Presents: The Susquehanna String Band - Rick Bunting, past chair of music education at Crane School of Music, has long been recognized for his vocal renditions of Scottish airs and ballads,” said Ellen Wahl, artistic director for the music hall. “Complimenting this great vocal tradition, Bunting excels instrumentally on banjo, lap dulcimer, concertina and flute. His curriculum work featuring traditional instruments has delighted students throughout the Northeast

Dan Duggan is a nationally touring performer and teacher. As recipient of the prestigious National Hammered Dulcimer Championship, Dan's accomplishment, though based on technical merit, is even more considerable as he is the first winner to have performed all original compositions. Dan has recorded four CDs of original compositions and a Family album of original songs. Selections of Dan's recordings, have been aired on National Public Radio. Dan's dulcimer work can also be heard on Paul Simon's Grammy nominated CD "Your The One" released in October of 2000.

John Kirk is best known for his great voice and has always made his living as a musician. He sings, fiddles, plays mandolin, banjo, guitar, adds footwork and calls dances. John has five of his own recordings and has played on over one hundred others. The Dixie Chicks recorded his song, “Long Roads”. He is known for workshops about fiddling for violinists. Since 1998, John has taught music at Bennington College. He also teaches at Skidmore College.
