History on Tap: Rum Runners, Bootleggers, & Speakeasies on Lake Ontario

June 1, 2022John Lamphere will present “Rum Runners, Bootleggers, & Speakeasies in western Oswego and northern Cayuga Counties” at the next History on Tap meeting. The power point program will begin at 7 PM on Wednesday, June 1st. It will be held in the Riverview Room at G.S. Steamers Restaurant in Oswego. Admission is free.
The fascinating and well researched program will focus on the specific area from Fairhaven to SUNY Oswego. It will feature lots of photographs and accounts of interviews with family members from Sterling who operated on Lake Ontario during the Prohibition Era. An energetic speaker who keeps audiences engaged, Lamphere will also present information obtained while conducting primary research on U.S. Coast Guard activities, and accounts off bootlegging and speakeasies operations acquired while serving as a Chief Deputy of the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office for nearly three decades.

June 18, 2022The Schroeppel Historical Society invites the public to Open House Saturdays and Garage Sale each Saturday through August with a docent on hand to answer visitors' questions .The 112 year- old- building, formerly St. John's Episcopal Church, boasts an impressive carved chestnut altar piece and original stained glass windows which light the building beautifully during the summer months. The exterior and interior of the building have been repaired and accurately preserved in keeping with its English Country Gothic architecture. Current and former residents of Phoenix, and the Shineman Foundation funded these improvements. The weekly garage sale, featuring quality items, will contribute to the final cost for basement stability Fund.
