New Director Debuts at CNY Arts Center

CNY Arts Center announces the debut of new director Dana Thomas with The Curious Savage running February 9-18. The play will be the 2018 season opener at the Arts Center located at 11 River Glen Dr. on the Cayuga College Fulton Campus.

Written by John Patrick and produced by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, The Curious Savage celebrates director Dana Thomas in her directing debut. As part of the mentoring program at the Arts Center, one new director per season brings a work they are passionate about delivering to an audience. With experience as an undergraduate director at SUNY Cortland, Dana is returning to her interest in theatre after a few years away. The Curious Savage was a highlight of her high school acting career at Phoenix High School and she always wanted to see the play produced with adult actors exploiting all sides of the interesting characters.

In the play, Mrs. Savage has been left $10,000,000.00 by her late husband and wants to make people happy by sharing it.  Her grown-up stepchildren think it’s a ridiculous waste and must stop her. To seize control, they commit her to a sanatorium where she meets a variety of social misfits who just can’t adjust to life on the outside. Mrs. Savage and her new friends lead the stepchildren on a merry chase to save the fortune and carry out her plans. The merry plot provides lots of opportunities for actors to develop characters of great depth and range, where Dana’s passion lies.

Dana was seen onstage last season in Godspell and quickly moved into other roles such as stage manager, props master and in fundraising. As part of the mentoring program she will begin learning other roles in the organization such as producer to support other directors with administrative support.

“As producer/mentor for Dana’s first directing experience at the Arts Center, I’m delighted to see her talent and experience being celebrated.” Said Nancy Fox, Executive Director of the organization. “She is doing a great job, very diligent and nurturing of her cast. It creates a great atmosphere for the actors to find all those funny moments and nuances of these characters. I look forward to sharing this delightful comedy with our audiences.”

The production runs Friday, and Saturday, February 9 and 10 at 7 pm, Sunday February 11 at 2 pm, and again Friday, February 16 at 7 pm, followed by Saturday and Sunday, February 17 and 18 at 2 pm. The second Saturday there is no evening performance and all matinees start at 2 pm. This is a correction from a previously stated start time of 3 pm in early printed calendars.
