THE ONEIDA SAILS INTO BREWERTON ELEMENTARYPosted on Jan 17, 2014
The painting of the U.S. Brig Oneida began its tour this week at Brewerton Elementary School. Created by award-winning local artist Tim Ames, in collaboration with naval historians Dr. Gary Gibson and Col. Clayton Nans, the artwork commemorates an interesting fact about Oswego’s role in the War of 1812. Built in Oswego between 1808 and 1809, the Oneida was involved in more actions throughout the campaign than any other warship. Pictured from left to right are Lisa Wells, acting librarian at Brewerton Elementary School, Jenny Emmons, curator at Fort Ontario State Historic Site; Erin Phillips, principal of Brewerton Elementary School; and Paul Lear, superintendent of Fort Ontario State Historic Site. Museums, schools, municipalities, libraries and other organizations are invited to host a display of the painting and share this testament to local history with residents and visitors. To schedule a display visit, contact Paul Lear at 315-343-4711 or email@example.com.
