Fishing Reports for March 12, 2010

This report is a courtesy of Oswego County Department of Community Development, Tourism and Planning.

Oswego Area - Oswego River, Lake Ontario

Oswego River:

According to Larry Muroski of Larry's Oswego Salmon Shop:

The water level has been rising with the melting snow. As of Friday morning it was running at 12,500cfs. Look for increasing flows with snow melt and the rain that is expected over the weekend. This will make some areas along the river difficult to access. Anglers and driftboats are taking brown trout behind the hotels using minnows, bucktail jigs, egg sacs and casting spoons. Look for steelhead from behind the Post Office down to Bridie Manor taking maribou jigs, moussies, minnows, trout beads, stone flies and woolly buggers.

Salmon River/Pulaski area

Salmon River:

According to Whitaker’s Sport Shop & Motel:

Thursday was a gorgeous day with plenty of sunshine and the temperature reached 60 degrees. With the mild weather and spring like conditions the fishing pressure has increased. The upper section of river between Altmar and Pineville continues to get the most fishing pressure, but is also holding the most fish. Despite the nice weather, most of the anglers we spoke with reported having a slow day. A few groups reported doing well in the Lower Fly Fishing Area, but overall the majority of anglers we spoke with had a tough day.

According to the Douglaston Salmon Run:

Temperatures are in the 50s and the water is still up to 750cfs. Fishing on the run has picked up some the past two days. However the snow melt is making the water temperature a bit cooler. Small presentations seem to be producing the most fish.

Oneida Lake

Safety has to be a concern at this time with the warmer daytime temperatures we are having. Conditions can vary greatly around the lake at this time of year and angler safety is the priority. Use extreme caution if you venture out. Fishing has picked up for yellow perch and walleye in the 20-25 foot depth range from Lewis Point to Verona Beach and Big Bay is producing bluegills. Just a reminder that walleye season ends on March 15.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sandy Pond

According to Dave Wood of Woody's Tackle:

As we have said, conditions can change rapidly for ice fishing at this time of year. There is still some ice on the pond but also many areas of unsafe ice with conditions varying greatly. With the warmer temperatures we have had, we feel it is over for the season. Just a reminder that northern pike and walleye seasons close March 15.
