Fishing Reports for August 25, 2008

This report a courtesy of Oswego County Department of Community Development, Tourism and Planning.

Oswego Area - Oswego River, Lake Ontario

Oswego River:

The river flow is running around 2,100 cfs (cubic feet per second). Fishing is slow on the river at this time. Some bass are still being taken on crabs and minnows. Smallmouth bass are biting better along the break wall in the harbor. Yellow perch are biting in front of Flat Rock off Fort Ontario on night crawlers and minnows. Lake Ontario:

According to Capt Troy Creasy of High Adventure Sportfishing Charters:

The weather is finally cooperating with less wind in the forecast. The salmon are also beginning to cooperate as plenty of fish can be found beginning to stage off the tributaries. All of our fish are coming on E-chips, Spin Dr’s and Inticer flashers in green, white, mountain dew and chrome with A-Tom-Mik flies in the Big Fin glow, Hammer, Hypnotist, Green Glow and the #23 fly. I know that many others are working too but that has been our pattern. We also hit a few on Luhr Jensen J-Plugs up in the warmer water.

Mexico Point - Little Salmon River, Lake Ontario, Mexico Bay

According to Capt. Gerry Bresadola of B&B Sportfishing Charters:

The fishing is just great on the Big, “O”, it’s the catching that leaves something to be desired and that’s been the story regarding king salmon since late July. It is not really that bad, it is just not quite as good as past experience shows. One thing for sure and that is the fish are big, really big. As more and more fish move in to stage in front of major tributary flows more targets will translate into better catches.  The best rig for kings continues to be flashers on the leading edge of assorted A-Tom-Mik flies.  Hot early bites usually happen in front of the nuke plant, Sythe Energy and the steamer just a bit west of the Oswego River.  Browns are still cooperating nearer to shore.

Salmon River/Pulaski area

According to Dave Wood of Woody's Tackle:

With the windy conditions today, we are finding only the bigger boats out on the lake. The fishing is fair to okay.  They are working hard for the fish.  In return, for the hard work the fish seem to be bigger than last year.

The lake salmon fishing is definitely picking up as they begin to make their way toward the Salmon River. Look in 100-110 ft. of water where limit catches are being reported. Flies, flashers, plastic bait and spoons are all taking the bite. The browns are at around 60-70 ft. of water with some salmon mixed in among them at times.

Oneida Lake

According to Capt. Troy Creasy of High Adventure Sportfishing Charters:

The walleye action has been good on Oneida Lake. Troll the deeper water pulling lead core in five or six colors. Jr. thundersticks and rapalas are working well. Fish anywhere from Buoy 121 to Buoy 109 but fish the north side of the buoys. Bass are active along the rock piles using crayfish.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sandy Pond

Largemouth bass and northern pike are still biting well on the pond. Minnows and worms are both working along with spinnerbaits, rubber worms and crankbaits. Bluegills and perch are also biting.
