Fishing Reports for July 30, 2010

This report is a courtesy of Oswego County Department of Community Development, Tourism and Planning.

Oswego Area - Oswego River, Lake Ontario

Oswego River:

According to Larry Muroski of Larry's Oswego Salmon Shop:

The water level dropped sharply from 10,000cfs to about 1,600cfs from Wednesday to Thursday. This morning the flow was 1,880cfs. All areas along the river are accessible. Otherwise things are about the same. Bass, sheephead and catfish are active throughout the river. Look for bass at flatrock in front of the fort. The walleye bite has slowed in the harbor area but anglers are still picking up a few. Suggested baits are minnows, leeches, crayfish, crankbaits and nightcrawlers.

Lake Ontario report:

According to Capt. Troy Creasy of High Adventure Sportfishing Charters:

The brown trout bite continues to be excellent in 80 to 130 feet of water. Add in a lake trout, steelhead or an Atlantic salmon in the mix and you have some good fishing. Stingers and Dream Weaver spoons in the glow frog, NBK, Yellow Killer and chicken wings are taking a lot of fish. Find the 54 degree water and set your spread in, above and below that area. The best troll has been the slow troll 1.7 to 2.0 tops. There are a few salmon being found. If you run deep 300 to 500 FOW put in your time and fish 140 to 170 feet down, you will take some nice adult salmon. They will be moving south very shortly as they will start their pre-spawn staging over the next few weeks.

Mexico Point - Little Salmon River, Lake Ontario, Mexico Bay

According to Capt. Troy Creasy of High Adventure Sportfishing Charters:

Bass fishing in and around Mexico Bay is providing some decent catches. Fish small jigs tipped with Mister Twister grubs. Slowly bounce the jigs off rocky bottoms and work the shoals and drop-offs. Crabs and worms are always a good bet. Also try the areas around four-mile point in Scriba and the green can just west of Oswego. Worms and crayfish drifted along the bottom are always the top producers there, but many anglers prefer to cast or troll small crankbaits.

Salmon River/Pulaski area

Salmon River:

There is little activity in the river at this time.

Pulaski Area:

According to Dave Wood of Woody's Tackle:

Conditions have remained about the same this week - lots of browns with only a few salmon to be found. The brown trout bite continues to be very good in 90-120 feet of water down about 100 feet. Spoons off the riggers and dipsys are working well. Bass fishing reportedly has picked up toward Mexico Bay with crayfish and minnows suggested baits.

Oneida Lake

According to Capt. Troy Creasy of High Adventure Sportfishing Charters:

Oneida Lake fishing is still excellent, especially on the west end of the lake. You can catch pickerel, bass, catfish and perch. If you want walleye fish in deeper water, troll purple and black Hot-n-Tots and jr. thundersticks at a depth of 25-38 feet.

 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sandy Pond

Activity on the pond has not changed much. There has been some bass and northern pike action especially along the weed lines. Spinnerbaits, rubber worms, and small crankbaits are working well.
