Fishing Reports for January 6, 2009
This report is a courtesy of Oswego County Department of Community Development, Tourism and Planning.
Oswego River:
According to Capt. Troy Creasy of High Adventure Sportfishing Charters:
The water level has dropped to 14,000cfs. Areas around the dam and Lock 7 should be in good shape for fishing as the water continues to recede. Look for plenty of steelhead and a few browns. Egg sacs in yellow and white along with worms and bucktail jigs will all work.

According to Whitaker’s Sport Shop and Motel:
On Monday we had windy conditions and the temperature reached into the 30's. The fishing pressure was very light and the few anglers we spoke with reported having a good day. Anglers in the upper end of the river reported having action in Altmar, Wire Hole and Trestle Pool. As of recently the most productive techniques have been fly fishing with strike indicators and egg patterns, bottom bouncing with nymph patterns in black, brown or olive. Float fishing with trout beads, pink worms or egg sacs is also working well.
According to Douglaston Salmon Run:
It is a beautiful day on the run. The weather is clear and the water level is down (375cfs) making winter wading a bit more user friendly. Fishing has been very good so far this winter. Egg sacs in pink and blue have been working wonders as well as pink power worms and small stone flies.

According to Capt. Troy Creasy of High Adventure Sportfishing Charters:
The walleye fishing on Oneida Lake continues to be very good. Again the above normal temperatures last week prevented any new ice formation but anglers were catching fish from shore and by boat. Evening fishing was the best using stickbaits and the black/silver and blue/silver colors remain the best color choice. Big Bay was reporting some ice and the cold temperatures we have had so far this week should help with new ice formation.

According to Dave Wood of Woody's Tackle:
The ice has really improved with the cold weather. Many areas have from 5-10 inches depending on where you are. Perch, northern pike and walleye are all active. Buckeye and fathead minnows and grubs are working well.
