Nestled between Great Lake Ontario and Oneida Lake – the largest lake located entirely within New York State – and home to dozens of ponds, streams and rivers, Oswego County is surrounded by water! These scenic treasures provide endless recreational opportunities for boaters, canoers and kayakers of all skill levels.

Enjoy a fine day kayaking Oswego Harbor before paddling into the spectacular sunset along the lakeshore. More adventurous types can try their hand at paddling or rafting down the rapids of the Salmon River. The Salmon River Reservoir and Lake Neatahwanta are also great for canoeing.

North and South Sandy Pond are part of the 17-mile stretch of the Eastern Lake Ontario Barrier Beach and Wetland Complex which includes Sandy Island Beach State Park. Spend the afternoon paddling around the pond and viewing the many species of shorebirds and water birds. Cap off the day by watching an incredible sunset from a white sandy beach.

For another view of the water, spend the day “locking through” the Oswego Canal, part of the New York State Canal System. Look for historic landmarks and remnants of the old canal, watch for bald eagles and herons, and don’t forget your fishing pole and tackle box for tremendous fishing opportunities!

Learn about the canal’s heritage and revel in its architecture – from a former drawbridge in Phoenix to the history of chocolate in Fulton; from the industrial beauty of the Minetto Bridge to a 1925 canal boat in Oswego. Boaters, kayakers and canoers alike enjoy this unique experience as well as the scenic vistas and friendly hospitality of the canal communities.

As with boating, make sure to keep water safety a top priority when exploring Oswego County’s pristine waters. Follow New York State boating laws, take a boating safety course, wear a personal flotation device and never use intoxicants while paddling. Check the weather forecast before setting out and inform someone where you will be and when you plan to return.

Water recreation opportunities abound in Oswego County. Renting a kayak or a pedal boat for a tour of Oswego Harbor is just one of the things to do in Oswego, NY. You can also rent equipment and launch into the north shore playland of Oneida Lake.

Miles of shoreline and dozens of marinas and boat launches around the county help launch your maritime adventures!
