World and State Records

Trophy sportfishing is the perfect reason to visit Oswego, NY as many anglers have broken state and world records fishing in our waters.

Oswego County fish that have set world records include brown trout, greater redhorse, rainbow trout, coho salmon, hybrid Chinook-coho and Chinook salmon.

Theresa Caputo is the latest dual Chinook world record holder in the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) record books, catching two record-breaking Chinook salmon in September 2020. Theresa’s first world record Chinook came in at 15 pounds, 2 ounces on an 8-pound tippet, and her second one weighed in at 20 pounds, 1 ounce.

Stephen Sheets Jr. is the holder of a long-standing record coho weighing 33 pounds, 7 ounces. The record-breaking fish was caught out of the Oswego Harbor in 1998 on a trip with Capt. Mike Stilin of Fish Tale Charters. Although the IGFA recognizes the world record coho as Jerry Linton’s 33-pound, 4-ounce fish caught in the Salmon River in 1989, both fish came from Oswego County’s territorial waters and are larger than their Pacific Ocean relatives.

If you’re looking to make your name in the record books, come enjoy terrific Oswego, NY fishing here in the Port City and across the entire county.
