Dog Sledding and Skijoring

Oswego County’s heavy snowfall is a major draw for sled dog trainers and racers. Mushers from across the northeast and Canada come to Winona State Forest in Boylston to take advantage of its well-developed trail system and the highest snowfall totals east of the Rocky Mountains. These lively activities – and the events that promote them – offer a unique winter recreation experience for all visitors.

People are welcome to bring their own dogs to Winona State Forest for a fun and exhilarating workout in the style of dog sledding and skijoring. Get up and moving during the winter months by putting on snowshoes or cross-country skis and attaching your dog to your waist like a sled dog for a “cool” spin on this clever fitness activity.

Winona State Forest Recreation Area is the site of many winter events for outdoor enthusiasts. In addition to mushing, other activities and events include cross-country skiing in the Winona Forest Tourathon, an internationally renowned event that welcomes Nordic skiers from across the United States and beyond; SnoFatShu, the first snowshoe / fat tire bike duathlon event of its kind in the country; and the IditaFAT Race, consistently one of the biggest winter fat tire bike events in the U.S.!
